Management of Trauma if Children Suspected of Survivors of Traffiking in Person: A Training of Trainers for Indonesian Social
workers

Jakarta 27 - 28 May 2024 The Independent Association of Professional Social Workers (IPSPI) and Social Welfare Department of the Binawan University, together with the OUR Rescue Indonesia Raya Foundation, held a training of trainers for social workers in Jakarta on 27-28 May. This training is supported by the Association of Indonesian Medical Social Workers (APSMI) and the Association of Indonesian Child and Family Social Workers (APSAKI), two affiliates of IPSPI, with the aim of forming a cohort of social worker trainers. They will be tasked with building the capacity of social workers in their respective areas to work with children who have experienced trauma related to exploitation, trafficking and exploitation.

With the growing prevalence of human trafficking in Indonesia, social workers are increasingly recognised as an important pillar in a multidisciplinary approach to protecting children affected by this crime. This training will help social workers, especially those working in provinces with the highest incidence of trafficking, to better understand the trauma experienced by trafficked children and the policies and programmes that support them. They will also learn how to respond effectively to cases of suspected child trafficking and exploitation.

The two-day training covered a range of important topics including the protection and rehabilitation of witnesses and victims, trauma-informed responses to children suspected of being victims of trafficking and exploitation, and improving training skills. It is hoped that this training will provide further impetus for cooperation between the various relevant institutions also involved in the fight against child trafficking and exploitation.

This training is also part of a collaborative effort to address the problem of human trafficking in Indonesia. It is hoped that this training will lead to improvements in support services for children who have survived trafficking and exploitation.

This activity began with a keynote speech by the Deputy for the Protection of Women's Rights, Ministry of Women's Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, Mrs Ratna Susianawati, SH., MH, delivered by Ir. Prijadi Santoso, M.Si, Assistant Deputy for the Protection of the Rights of Working Women and the Crime of Human Trafficking. In his remarks, he emphasised that trafficking in human beings is a serious problem, the solution of which is one of the national priorities and therefore requires the cooperation of all parties, including social workers.

Mr Henry Cook, Director of the OUR Foundation, also gave a speech along with the Vice Chancellor of Binawan University, Mr Farouk Abdullah Alwyni, MA, MBA, ACSI, CDIF, who welcomed this collaborative activity and hoped to make Binawan University the Indonesian Centre of Excellence for Medical Social Work.  Ms Katrina Mariswamy, Aftercare Regional Officer for Asia, also attended the training in an effort to broaden OUR Foundation's horizons in the region.

The training was provided by OUR Foundation's Dr Virginia Jordan Greenbaum, MD, Medical Director of the International Center for Missing and Exploited Children, Board Member of the International Society for the Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect (ISPCAN), and Past President of the American Professional Society for Child Abuse and Chair of After Care at OUR Global Foundation. Dr Greenbaum presented material ranging from assessing the physical needs and mental health of children who are victims of exploitation and trafficking, to sensitive responses to child trauma, to secondary stress and self-care for those helping children who are victims of trauma.

Ms Suarni Dang Caya, a social worker and expert from OUR Foundation, discussed various technical aspects including standard operating procedures for integrated services dealing with TIP in Indonesia and the role of social workers in this framework.

As an important part of this training of trainers, Dr Puji Pujiono, MSW, President of the Independent Association of Professional Social Workers, Indonesia, discussed the medium-term development plan context in Indonesia under the new President and the prospects for the position, role and contribution of social workers, including medical and health social workers, in social transformation and the care economy approach.

The training was attended by 40 social workers from regional government technical service units for women's empowerment and child protection, social workers from provinces most affected by human trafficking, child and family social workers' associations, medical social workers' associations, and social welfare and social work scholars and academics. The participants are expected to become a pioneering group of social work practitioners who will help to raise awareness and understanding of child trafficking and exploitation among social workers in Indonesia.

The training concluded with the preparation of a follow-up plan, including the implementation of training for social workers and other stakeholders in the areas where the training participants came from, the further development of the social work framework in the medical and health sector, and the development of cooperation between IPSPI, the OUR Foundation and Binawan University.
